What to see in Agra

There are three headline sites, and Agra's own tourism page and Wikivoyage agree on the top two.

Taj Mahal

UNESCO World Heritage Site and the reason most people come. Wikivoyage notes that once you are inside the Taj itself, you are free of touts and scams.

Agra Fort

UNESCO-listed Mughal fort. Wikivoyage names the Taj and the Fort as the top two sights by far.

Fatehpur Sikri

A UNESCO "ghost city" about 40 km from Agra, built in the 16th century by Akbar and abandoned in 1586 due to water shortages, per Wikivoyage.

Old city markets

Wikivoyage suggests strolling the local markets in the old city. Be wary of anyone steering you to a particular shop.

Food

Wikivoyage names petha (a very sweet candy) and dal moth (a spicy lentil mix) as Agra specialities, popular as souvenirs. The sweet shops near Hari Parwat are listed there. Compare a few before buying.

When to go

Wikivoyage warns that late December and early January bring fog and train delays. Check the weather for your dates and start early; this guide has no seasonal rules beyond the fog warning.

Getting there from Delhi NCR

Agra is 206 km from Delhi on the official tourism page. Wikivoyage describes close to 20 trains per day between Delhi and Agra (2-5 hours), government and private buses, and the Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida (about 210 km, around 3.5 hours by car, with a toll). Check live operators before you book.

A sample outline

An editorial outline, not a booked tour or a verified timetable. Change it to match your own transport.

  1. Morning. Taj Mahal first, while the crowds are lighter, then a slow walk back through the gardens.
  2. Afternoon. Agra Fort, a quick petha stop, then leave in time for a calm return. Add Fatehpur Sikri only if you are staying a night.
