Haridwar means "Gateway to God". It is a pilgrimage town on the Ganges, where the river leaves the mountains. Add it to Rishikesh or do it as a short trip of its own.

What to see in Haridwar

The town is compact; most visits combine one river ghat and one hill temple.

Har Ki Pauri

Haridwar's focal point, where devotees gather to bathe and worship on the Ganges. The district tourism page lists access modes for it. The evening aarti is the main reason to be here at dusk.

Food

Wikivoyage says Haridwar is a purely vegetarian town. Listed local breakfast spots include chole-based dishes on the road up to Mansa Devi. Prices in Wikivoyage are dated, so ask first.

When to go

Wikivoyage advises against visiting during the Hindu month of Sawan (around July) because of heavy crowds and blocked roads, and also against the monsoon. The Kanwar Mela in July is described as the largest yearly festival. Once every 12 years the Kumbh Mela is held here. Check the festival calendar before you set dates.

Getting there from Delhi NCR

Haridwar is reached by train and by bus from Delhi. It is also the usual rail head for Rishikesh, with bus or shared autos onward. Book the return first, especially in summer when Wikivoyage notes AC buses run short.
